Discovering Glimmers of Inspiration During Times of Despair

Susan Williams' basement recently flooded with over three feet of water. Many of her personal items were damaged - except one thing survived. She now feels some obligation that this should be shared.

I recently had a weekend that was definitely one that I wasn't expecting.

The remnants of a tropical storm hit our community and as we dealt with close to over 157 mm of rain, our city's infrastructure couldn't cope and we found ourselves facing over three feet of water rushing into our basement.

We were in shock.

We have been fortunate to not have experienced anything like this before so I now have an increased appreciation for the pain of people I would often see on news reports who were devastated as they tried to pick up the pieces of their homes lost after a catastrophic event.

I found it to be such a strangely unnerving and sad situation as I waded through all our destroyed personal belongings now floating on the surface of the murky water that invaded our home.

Once the water regressed, we slowly started combing through the damage. As much as it was upsetting to lose our physical items, the thing that I found most distressing to lose was pictures. I had three boxes of family photos that were completely destroyed. Memories of my family that were captured in print are now gone forever.

I keep reminding myself that this situation could have been much worse. No one was hurt and our home is still standing.

But what I did discover in one piece was a journal I wrote back in 2009. It contained random thoughts and experiments to try to live a happier and healthier life. I figured if this one book made it to the surface of my despair and survived it's my obligation now to breathe some life into it. So, I'm planning on sharing these thoughts I had way back when with you over the next month or so.

Maybe by doing this, it might make the sting of this experience a little less painful as I focus on some of the positive things I was thinking on how to appreciate and live life to the fullest. No matter what we might be coping with.

Hope you enjoy my musings!
