60 Before 60 Project: #55 - Visit One of the Most Photographed Lighthouses In the World

There is place in Canada that is continuously photographed and shared as a highlight of eastern Canada’s landscape. It’s even believed to be the location of one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.
The place - Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia.
Peggy’s Cove is located approximately a one hour drive from the capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax. When I was speaking with a friend about visiting the east coast, they told me that the views from Peggy’s Cove had to be seen so we made a point of driving there on our way to our next destination.
The day we went we were fortunate that we were blessed with decent weather. The day had initially called for rain but as we pulled into the parking lot, the clouds dispersed, and the sun began to shine.
My first impression of Peggy’s Cove was that it seemed much smaller than I had expected. Maybe it was a case of seeing the pictures in advance and expecting them to have come from a large expanse of scenery. But as I walked down the road towards the lighthouse, I was mesmerized by the gorgeous views all the way to the Atlantic coast.
When I reached the lighthouse, I couldn’t help but feel like I was at the end of the world. Every direction I looked there was ocean.
As we climbed over the rocks that housed the lighthouse, we noticed there was a security guard. When talking with him, he told us that he was there to ensure that people were careful on the rocks as the tides can shift quite quickly making the rocks slippery and dangerous. It also seemed quite busy but he told us that the time we were visiting was extremely quiet.
In peak season, the rocks would be totally crowded with people literally climbing over each other to get that perfect photograph. I guess that is one of the perks of visiting in the should season.
We wandered around for about an hour and then headed back to the car to drive on to our next destination.
Peggy’s Cove is a beautiful place to visit. I didn’t realize it fully until I started to look at the pictures I had taken. Every shot was literally postcard worthy.
I remember once listening to a photographer from National Geographic speak. He told us that nature produces beauty as when we see something beautiful, we can’t help but want to protect it.
I can understand why Peggy’s Cove is protected.
