60 Before 60 Project: #11 - Go To See Live Theatre

I haven't been to see live theatre in years. But when the Broadway musical "Come From Away" was making it's North American tour I thought this would be a great chance to go for my 60 Before 60 Project.

It’s been years since I have seen live theatre. And it’s not for lack of opportunity. I am very fortunate in that we have many live theatre options in our city but for some reason I just never found the time to go and see the shows.

But the Broadway Musical “Come From Away” was on it’s North American tour and was going to be stopping in our city. I thought seeing live theatre and particularly this show would be a great addition to my 60 Before 60 List.

Going to see live theatre is a much different experience than something like going to see a movie. Before the show, the doors to the theatre are opened and if you like, you are able to get a drink and wander around the theatre. You also feel a sort of buzz in the air as everyone eagerly anticipates the start of the show.

With regards to buying tickets, for my previous 60 Before 60 experience of going to the symphony because it was an audible experience I wasn’t too concerned about seeing the stage when I bought the tickets. However, given that this show was both an audible and visual experience, I wanted to make sure that we had tickets where we had a good view of the stage. Fortunately, our seats didn’t disappoint.

My daughter and I absolutely loved this musical!

Right from the first foot stomp and opening song, the lively music grabbed my attention and held it from the start through to the finish. The heartwarming true story of the people of Gander, Newfoundland welcoming strangers to their island during one of our most turbulent and stressful times in history couldn’t help but warm my heart.

There’s also something about seeing live theatre. You feel the energy and enthusiasm of the actors and musicians and can’t help but admire and appreciate their talent. You also are sharing an experience with the audience that you know is only happening at that particular moment in time.

You also realize that there is no room for error. There are no retakes in live theatre – the cast and production crew have to put it all on the line for that one show.

I really enjoyed this experience and plan on doing it again soon. Definitely something to keep on my keep doing list.

My 60 Before 60 Lesson: When you see something live, you’re experiencing a moment in time that can’t be repeated again.
