60 Before 60 Project: #45 - Learn How to Make Fresh Pasta

I love pasta and on the very rare occasion, rather than buying my usual boxed variety, I’ll buy fresh pasta.
There’s something different when you eat fresh pasta. I’m not sure if it’s the soft texture and eggier flavour or the fact that it cooks so quickly, but I find when fresh pasta is involved it seems to just elevate a meal.
When I was speaking with friends about my 60 Before 60 Project, one of them offered to teach me how to make fresh pasta. Never having done this before I jumped at the chance. The amazing bonus was that the rest of the group also decided to join in on the experience.
Having more people there was a great idea.
I quickly discovered that making pasta is a little more labour intensive that I had originally anticipated so having more people to help really made a difference and proved that “many hands make for light work”.
As we set up our makeshift assembly line, I also discovered firsthand how when people cook together it creates a bond or sense of community as you work beside each other in making a meal.
I also learned that making fresh pasta takes quite a bit of time and there are many steps involved. From making and kneading the dough, to stretching, cutting and drying you need to make sure that you give yourself quite a bit of time. But what I also found was that this time goes by very quickly when you are doing it with others.
The bonus of course for all this work and time is some great fresh pasta.
As I ate the meal surrounded by all the people that helped to prepare it, not only was it delicious but it was also satisfying knowing that we all made the meal together.
I found this experience was different then just going to someone’s house for dinner or even sharing a pot-luck meal, it was a special meal that we all contributed to creating at one specific moment in time.
Resulting in a meal (and an experience) to remember.
