Dear Retirement Coach;

My entire identity has been tied to my career as a corporate executive—people sought my advice, respected my decisions, and I felt valued in that role. Now that I’m retiring, I’m struggling with the question: “Who am I without my title and position?” How do I redefine myself in a way that still feels purposeful and impactful, while also embracing this new chapter of my life?

Dear Who Am I,

Thank you for opening up and sharing your thoughts with me. Transitioning from a successful corporate career into retirement is a big shift, and it’s completely natural to feel unsettled when so much of your identity has been tied to your work. Please know that you’re not alone in feeling this way. Many people struggle with the same question of "Who am I now?"—and the good news is, this is also an incredible opportunity to redefine yourself on your own terms.

Let’s explore some ways to help you navigate this transition and create a meaningful and fulfilling next chapter.

Acknowledge and Celebrate Your Past

Your career has been a big part of your story, shaping you with skills like leadership, resilience, and the ability to inspire others. But retirement doesn’t mean leaving all of that behind—think of it more as a pivot point. Take some time to reflect on what made your career meaningful to you.

For example, if mentoring was something you loved, maybe that’s something you can carry forward into a new role as a volunteer, advisor, or even a coach.

Redefine What Success Looks Like

In your corporate role, success may have been measured by promotions, achievements, or recognition. Now, it’s about personal fulfillment and aligning your life with what matters most to you. Think about what brings you joy. What sparks your curiosity or makes you feel energized? These are often clues to what might be fulfilling in this new phase.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to explore a creative hobby, travel to places you’ve dreamed of, or give back to your community. Or perhaps there’s a cause you’re passionate about or a skill you’ve always wanted to learn. Retirement gives you the freedom to define success in a way that feels right for you.

Explore New Interests

This is your time to experiment and discover. Ask yourself:

What have I always wanted to do but never had time for?
What causes or activities light me up?
What skills or experiences would I love to dive into?

Some retirees I’ve worked with have found joy in unexpected places—like writing, teaching, or even learning to play an instrument.

The key is to keep an open mind and allow yourself to try new things without pressure.

Strengthen Relationships

Your work likely gave you a built-in network, and now is a great time to nurture those relationships while building new ones.

Join groups, attend events, or get involved in activities that interest you—this can connect you with like-minded people. And don’t forget the opportunity to deepen bonds with family and close friends.

Being intentional about spending time with loved ones can be incredibly rewarding and help you feel grounded.

Embrace the Possibilities

I know this transition can feel overwhelming, but it’s also full of potential. Think of retirement as a blank canvas where you can paint your next chapter however you like. It can help to spend some time reflecting on the kind of person you want to be now.

One simple exercise is to write down three words that describe the "retired you." Let those words guide your choices as you move forward.

Be Patient with Yourself

Redefining your identity takes time. It’s a gradual process, and there will be some trial and error along the way. Be kind to yourself as you explore what feels right—and give yourself permission to pivot if something doesn’t click. If you ever feel stuck, remember that you don’t have to do it alone. Whether it’s reaching out to a coach, joining a group of peers, or just talking things through with someone you trust, having support can make a world of difference.

Your identity is so much more than a title—it’s your values, passions, and the unique ways you touch the lives of others. Retirement is your chance to expand that identity and build a life that’s as meaningful as it is fulfilling.
