60 Before 60 Project: #52 - Share a Life Experience With My Son

One of my biggest hopes of my 60 Before 60 Project was to share a life experience with each of my adult children. They had both left home and were actively building lives of their own.

I knew that the window to schedule and share something special with them was closing as their careers, personal lives and relationships were filling their time. So before it was too late, I was hoping to share some type of life experience with them.  

I was so fortunate to have done this with my daughter early in my quest as we went on a cruise to Alaska together. My son and I had also scheduled an earlier trip however the flight was cancelled and I was then unsure whether we were going to be successful in rescheduling.  

But we were. 

And I feel so fortunate. I was able to visit the west coast with my daughter and now the east coast with my son. I would never have believed that I would see both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in one year!  

This trip with my son was so special.

My son had left home to attend both high school and university and, in some ways, I felt that I missed out on some valuable time with him.  

As we toured the Canadian east coast, I felt so grateful to share this experience with him.  During our time together we had the chance to talk, laugh, share stories and learn more about each other as adults. I discovered more about what was important to him, his views of life and his aspirations for his future. And in his words, we created some “memories for life”. 

I couldn’t help but feel proud of the person he had become. 

I have to say, out of all my experiences over this past year having the chance to share something special with each of my kids is definitely at the top of the list. I’m sure that we will have the opportunity in the future to spend more special times together but I am certainly glad that we made the time to take the time now. 

As we all are well aware - tomorrow is never guaranteed. 

My 60 Before 60 Life Lesson: We need to make sure that we take the time to make the time for the people who are important to us
